Letters (Aug. 23, 2017)

I would like to share my observations and thoughts on revamping the responses of our city to the homeless problem. In reading the minutes of your committee from 6/21, I disagree that our local homeless problem stems from poverty or lack of housing.

The Settler Killers

The preliminary hearing in the gang-murder of Laytonville pot pharmer Jeffery Settler last November got underway last Monday, but most of the first day was taken up with pleas from three of the seven defendants. Zachary Wuester, Gary “Giggles” Fitzgerald, and Said “Richie” Mohamed who each pled to nine years…

The Bullfight

On these dusty grounds, every year more than 30,000 fighting bulls are publicly beaten, pierced by gaffs, dragged by the neck with a rope, burnt alive by tar bullets, and beheaded in the midst of a great revelry. There is no longer a bloodthirsty God presiding over this carnage who…

Bird’s Eye View (Aug. 23, 2017)

I must express utter dismay at the failure of my column to appear in last week’s print issue of the AVA. – it was visible in the on-line version at www.theava.com. I received numerous phone calls and emails expressing concern and disappointment at this development. The ‘Powers-that-Be’ were unavailable for…

The Marketplace & Enforcement

It seems Mendocino County is unaware that state resource agencies are charged under state legislation legalizing marijuana to actually enforce state resource laws. These are basic laws that prevent environmental degradation on all lands, illegal water diversion and discharge, illegal or “moonscape” grading, illegal timber harvests, illegal use of pesticides…

Little Rivers Of Time

Thanks to three separate repair projects, driving north from Cloverdale on Highway 128 is a joy that lasts almost forever. Eleven miles, dead stop. Five miles, dead stop. Four hundred yards, then slow, slower, bang, you’re dead!

Sweetcorn Diplomacy

Saturday morning we showed at the Ukiah farm about seven o’clock to start picking sweetcorn. The market starts at nine. No matter how tasty your sweetcorn is, it’s always better harvested that morning, as the sugars turn to starch over time. At first I planned on dropping off the corn…

A Hostile Takeover Of Emergency Services

THE SUPES VOTED 3-1 TUESDAY to proceed with the privatization of county dispatch services and inland ambulance services. The beneficiariary of the county’s latest give away will be the global Danish ambulance and medical services giant, the Falck Group. SUPERVISOR John McCowen wisely tried to convince his fellow Supervisors (Gjerde…

Off the Record (Aug. 23, 2017)

WAS RUFFING PUSHED or did she jump? I’m guessing the Fort Bragg City Manager was pushed then, assured of a soft landing onto a cash-stuffed mattress, jumped. It would have gone like this: “Look, Linda, if you’ll leave voluntarily we’ll bump your pay up so you’ll make almost as much…

Letters (Aug. 16, 2017)

I am very disappointed in Georgeanne Croskey’s recent announcement [that she will not seek re-election when her term runs out]. First, she was appointed to serve out Tom Woodhouse’s term without any say by the people she is supposed to be representing. Second, she came to this appointment with no…

Casino

Here in Colorado, both marijuana and casino gambling are legal. I have no moral judgment on this, other than pot was more fun back when. Speaking of drugs, a clear 40 year-old memory sticks with me… Sitting in a Sausalito houseboat waiting to score some dope, and looking at the…

Smoke & Fire

Cue the corn pone Nazis. Enter, stage left. Well, what did you expect? With the various authorities in this culture incessantly applying “white privilege” noogies to the public’s skull, sooner or later they were sure to provoke a lizard-brain response from the more limbic-oriented low orders of honkeydom. Of course,…

Over-Reactions

The human brain is an amazing organ, and capable of some genuinely astonishing things. I’m not even talking about Einstein-y super-genius level insight, which is of course amazing but not exactly evenly distributed among the populace. Re-Opened Cannabis Ordinance Nearly Wrapped

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors last week) August 8, concluded a month-long series of meetings on cleaning up, tweaking, and amending its three-month-old Cannabis Ordinance. As has been the case with all things marijuana on the Supes’ agenda, the crowd overflowed the chambers. The big crowd served as talking…

Coast Hospital Ignores Complaints

Here’s your headline: With a lone exception, the Mendocino Coast District Hospital Board of Directors has decided to ignore a growing list of seemingly valid complaints from a number of hospital staff members because they (the board members) are afraid of the potential upheaval, economic and otherwise, that might occur…
